Hand off a project to a client

You'll move a project you built for a client into their own account, on the plan you choose, so they pay for it directly while your agency keeps access.

Build a project with your client in your agency organization, then hand it off when it's ready. Your client takes it into their own RightMessage account and pays for it on the plan you chose, and your agency keeps access so you can keep working on it together.

Handoffs work from an agency organization, for a demo project or a project your agency already pays for. You'll need permission to manage the project's billing.

Send the handoff

  1. Open the project, then Project settings (the gear at the bottom of the sidebar) > Plan & billing.
  2. Under Hand off to a client, enter your client's email in Client email. They'll accept from the emailed link, signed in with this address.
  3. Under Plan, choose the plan your client will pay for, then Monthly or Yearly. Each plan shows its price a month. Your client can't change the plan when they accept.
  4. Choose Send handoff.

You can't choose a plan that doesn't cover what the project uses. The note under Plan names those features and the plan they need, such as campaigns needing Scale or above, and the cheapest plan that covers the project is selected for you.

We email your client Your RightMessage project is ready for you, with your agency's name, the plan and billing interval you chose, and an Accept the project button. The section then shows Waiting for their email to accept, with the plan and the date the link expires. Links expire 30 days after you send them. Sending is subject to the same invitation safety limits as other invitations.

A project has one pending handoff at a time. It stays editable while you wait, so you can keep building. If you add something the chosen plan doesn't cover, the section warns that your client can't accept until you cancel this handoff and send a new one on the plan the project now needs.

Cancel a handoff

Choose Cancel handoff, then Cancel handoff again in the confirmation. The link stops working and the project stays with your agency. You can send a new handoff whenever you like.

Once your client has started paying for the project, the handoff can't be canceled, and it finishes moving the project to them. The exception is a project that now needs a higher plan than the one you chose: you can still cancel, and anything your client paid is kept as credit on their account.

What your client sees

The Accept the project button opens a page titled Take over project name. It says your agency is handing the project over, that it'll move to their account and they'll pay RightMessage directly, and that your agency keeps access to help.

  1. They sign in or create an account. If no RightMessage account uses the invited email yet, they enter Your name and Choose a password, then choose Create account and continue. The emailed link already confirms their address. If they have an account, they choose Sign in to accept and sign in with the invited email.
  2. They review the plan. Your plan shows the plan and billing interval you chose, with its price. A note says you chose it for the features the project uses, with a link to contact you about it.
  3. They add a card. They enter Card details or use a saved card. A line under the card says when it's charged.
  4. They choose Accept project. Their bank might ask them to confirm the payment. The project then opens in their account, with a message that it's now there.

If their account already covers all its projects, such as a free account, a lifetime deal, or a legacy account-wide plan, the page says there's nothing to pay, and they only choose Accept project.

What happens when your client accepts

  • The project moves to your client. It goes into their organization, on their own subscription for the plan you chose. They pay full price, without your agency discount, and you earn your commission on their payments.
  • Your agency keeps access. Their organization is linked to your agency, so your team opens the project from the project selector or Clients & invitations, like any client you brought in. Your client can end that access from their side.
  • Your agency stops paying for it. If your agency was paying for the project, that subscription ends right away, and the unused time becomes a credit on your agency's account toward its next invoices. The same goes for the project's lead alerts volume. Auto-raise turns off, so your client buys their own volume if they need one.

From then on, billing questions about the project go to your client. For who pays for what across your other projects, see account, plan, and agency billing questions.
