Revenue Overview reference
You'll see what your Stripe customers have paid, which segments they come from, and what they bought after seeing your flows, pages, and offers. Here's how each number works.
Updated
View as MarkdownRevenue Overview puts your Stripe revenue in one place: what you've earned all time, which customers are worth the most, what people bought after seeing your flows, pages, offers, and traffic sources, and what personalization added where you held visitors back. This page explains each section and what its numbers count.
Open it from Other dashboards at the bottom of your Dashboard, or choose Revenue under Dashboard in the sidebar.
Before Stripe is connected
Without a Stripe connection, the page asks you to connect: Connect Stripe to see what your customers are worth. It's read-only, and payments are matched to people by email.
- In Stripe, create a restricted key. Open API keys in Stripe opens Stripe in a new tab.
- Give it Read access to Charges, Customers and Subscriptions.
- Paste it into Restricted key and choose Connect Stripe.
What you'll see lists the three sections that fill in once your payments are in. For the key's permissions and every message the key check can show, see Connect Stripe and see which segments buy.
While your payments import
During the first import, Importing your Stripe payment history shows when it started, how many payments are in so far, and how far back it has reached, working back from today. You can leave the page; it fills in when the import finishes. If Stripe has no payments yet, No payments yet says the page fills in after your first payment.
After that, the page shows your numbers while older payments keep arriving. Until every past payment is in, RightMessage can't tell a brand-new customer from a returning one, so:
- Revenue by month shows one total for each month, with "New and existing customers show once Stripe finishes importing your older payments."
- Revenue by flow, page and offer waits, with "This fills in once Stripe finishes importing your older payments, so returning customers aren't counted as new."
- Lifetime numbers can still grow as older payments arrive.
Stripe status and currency
Stripe's status sits beside the title.
| If you see | It means |
|---|---|
| Synced and how long ago | Payments are up to date. RightMessage checks Stripe about every hour. |
| Importing | The first import is still running. |
| Importing older payments | Recent payments are in, and older ones are still arriving. Hover over it to see how far back the import has reached. |
| Last synced and how long ago | RightMessage hasn't synced successfully for 3 hours. It keeps retrying. |
| Key rejected and when it last synced | Stripe stopped accepting your key. |
When Stripe rejects your key, Stripe rejected your key says when it stopped working, and the numbers below are as of then. Choose Reconnect to paste a new restricted key, or Create a new key in Stripe.
If you have payments in more than one currency, a currency switch appears beside the title. Totals are never added across currencies.
All time
| Card | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Lifetime revenue | Every imported payment minus refunds, with the number of payments and how much was refunded. |
| Customers | People with at least one payment that wasn't fully refunded, matched by email. If some payments had no email, it says how many. |
| Value per customer | What a customer has paid you in total, as the median, with the mean and the amount the top 10% paid more than. |
| Bought more than once | The share of customers with more than one payment, and how many payments each customer made on average. |
Revenue by month runs from your first payment to your latest, including months with nothing. Each bar splits into New customers (people whose first payment was that month), Existing customers, and, if any payments had no email, No email. Together they make up the month's revenue. Hover over a month to see its numbers.
Which customers are worth the most
Choose a Segment group to compare what customers in each segment or answer have paid over their lifetime. Beside the picker, Question group or Rule-based group says how the group credits buyers: a question group uses the answer each customer holds now, and a rule-based group uses where they stood. How revenue by segment is counted has the details.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Lifetime value per customer | The segment's revenue divided by its customers. It appears once a segment has 5 customers. Until then, you'll see how far along it is, as in "3 of 5 customers". |
| Customers | Customers credited to the segment. |
| Revenue | What those customers paid, minus refunds. |
| Share | The segment's share of the group's revenue. |
For a question group, No answer collects the customers who never answered, with a line such as "240 customers haven't answered. Together they've paid $76,310." When RightMessage reads answers from your email platform for customers who never answered on your site, a line starting Answered in and your platform's name says how much came from those answers. While it's still looking customers up, a progress line beside the picker shows how many it has checked.
Revenue by flow, page and offer
See who bought after seeing each of your flows, pages, offers, and traffic sources. It shows what happened, not what caused it.
Choose a tab: Flows & quizzes, Pages, Offers, or Traffic sources. A tab with nothing to show is hidden, but Traffic sources always shows. On Traffic sources, choose Channel, Referring site, Landing page, or UTM campaign.
Two settings decide what's counted:
| Setting | Options |
|---|---|
| People reached in the | last 30 days, last 90 days, or last 365 days |
| who bought | within 30 days, within 90 days, within a year, or at any point after they were reached |
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Started, Viewed it, Saw it, or Visitors | People reached: they started the flow, viewed the page, saw the offer, or arrived from the source in that period. |
| Became customers | People reached whose first payment came after they were reached, within the window you chose. |
| Revenue | What those new customers paid. Renewals and repeat purchases from people who had paid before show underneath as + $X from existing customers, and stay out of the bar and the per-person value. |
| Per person | New customers' revenue divided by the people reached. It appears once a row has 5 new customers and 30 people reached. |
A quiz opens onto its results, and a flow with A/B test versions opens onto its versions, so you can compare them. Built-in banners are listed last.
When one row stands out, a tip above the table says so, such as "New customers who got the "Growing team" quiz result spent $700 each. "Solo" spent $300." Without a clear difference, or below the minimums, there's no tip.
Someone who saw several of these counts in each, so rows add up to more than your revenue. The note under the table also says how many of your customers have been on your site since tracking began, and which recently reached people haven't had the whole window to buy yet.
Revenue reaches a row only through a customer's email, linked to the visitors RightMessage recognized on your site. To match more customers, help RightMessage recognize your visitors.
Tested against a holdback
Each live campaign that holds back a share of its visitors gets a card comparing revenue per visitor for Personalized and Held back visitors over the last 90 days, with the Difference and its range. Each campaign stands alone, so they're never added up. The card shows when the campaign went live and how much it holds back, and Open campaign opens it. Until each group has 5 buyers and 30 visitors, the card says which group needs more and how far along each one is.
When no live campaign holds visitors back, the section offers Add a holdback to a campaign and How holdbacks work. Campaigns require Scale or Pro. See compare personalization with a holdback.
When a number isn't ready
- Still filling in at the top lists what a young project can't show yet, such as "Shows at 5 customers per segment." or "Show at 5 new customers and 30 people reached."
- A section that's still calculating says so, such as Calculating value by segment ("Usually a minute or two.") or Calculating for revenue by flow, page and offer ("This can take a few minutes.").
- A section that couldn't be calculated says "This couldn't be calculated. Nothing is shown rather than zeros." with Try again.
Payments without an email can't be matched to anyone. They count toward Lifetime revenue and the monthly bars, but not toward customers or the sections below.
