Use the campaign editor to change your existing page for different audiences. You can work on the page, compare audience copy side by side, and check combinations before publishing. Each change belongs to one audience and one element.

Open a campaign and choose Edit on page. The editor opens in the same tab.

Rename the campaignClick its name in the breadcrumb, or the pencil that appears when you point at it. Press Enter or click outside to save the name. Escape cancels the rename.
Change something on the pageEdit. Choose an audience, then click an element.
Compare copy across audiencesMatrix. Elements appear in rows and audiences in columns.
Try combinations of segmentsPreview. Use the Preview as: pickers below the page.
Check a different screen widthDesktop, Tablet, or Mobile. These change the editor's page width, not who receives a change.
Open a different pageIn Preview, enter its URL in Page address and press Enter or choose Go.
Return to the previous page or load it againBack or Reload page beside Page address in Preview.

Opening a URL doesn't create page-targeting rules. Each change's Pages settings decide where it runs.

Editor settings and remembered switches

The gear button opens Editor settings:

  • Add a change by selector opens Add by selector. Select an audience before opening it. Enter a CSS selector, check the match count, then choose Add change. A valid selector can be added even when it has no match on this page.
  • Scroll-reveal fix makes content hidden by scroll animations easier to edit. It changes the editing view, not your published site's animations.
  • Above-fold warnings flags changed content visible before scrolling, where visitors could briefly see the original content as personalization loads.

The third switch, Outline elements changed for other audiences, is below the changes list. It helps you spot elements personalized for a different audience.

All three switches start on and are remembered in your browser.

Audiences and the changes list

The left panel in Edit lists Audiences, grouped by the questions or segment groups they use. Original page is the page visitors see when no audience matches. Its Control is your unchanged page and can't be edited. After you choose A/B test the original page, you can edit its variants. Audience rows offer A/B test this audience, and tested rows show an A/B test badge.

While a test is running on your live site, its row also shows a beaker icon. Hover over it or click it to see the test's status and run dates, each version's share of the split, and the goal. End test and Restart with changes open the same dialogs as the campaign's Testing tab.

Add audiences lets you choose segments. Its Select all and Clear all controls apply to the displayed group. Each selected segment creates an audience. Every audience needs at least one segment. Visitors from a link creates an audience, and its segment, from a UTM or other query parameter; see add an audience from a link.

An audience's menu offers Rename, Edit targeting, Duplicate, and Delete. In Edit targeting, choose any of these or all of these, select segments, and choose Save targeting. Drag a group's handle to move its audiences together. To change the priority of individual overlapping audiences, use Overlapping audiences.

Audiences without changes keeps audiences without changes on the current page out of the way when the list is long. Collapse audiences shrinks the panel, including the changes list, to a narrow strip whose icon names what you're editing. Expand audiences opens it again, and your browser remembers the choice. On narrower editor windows, an audience picker replaces the left panel.

For the selected audience:

  • On this page lists its changes found on the current page. Click a card to open its element editor.
  • Other changes includes changes on other pages and changes marked Not found on this page. A different-page card opens its page, or asks for a matching example URL when its rule covers several pages.
  • Personalized for other audiences shows elements changed for other audiences. With Original page selected, this section is Personalized for audiences.

See manage personalization audiences for adding, targeting, and ordering audiences.

Select an element

In Edit, click the text, image, button, or section you want to change. Right-click to choose the element or one of the larger elements containing it. Hold Alt while selecting to select an empty overlay rather than the content behind it.

The element editor opens beside your selection. For an element as wide as the page, or taller than the editor, it opens beside the spot you clicked instead. Drag its header if it covers something you need to see. Editing audience, Previous audience, and Next audience let you work on the same element for another audience. Done or the close button closes the window; neither publishes your changes.

In Matrix, Add element returns you to Edit to select an element. See select the right page element.

Content

The element editor has Content, Style, and Pages sections.

For text, Content mode offers:

If you'd like to…Choose
Write a new version of the whole elementReplace all content. Enter the audience's wording in Content.
Compare with the unchanged wordingShow original. Choose Hide original to close it.
Change only matching wordsFind and replace. Enter the search in Find and the replacement in With.
Make several replacementsAdd replacement. Each pair has its own remove button and match count.

Switching content modes clears the other mode's content change. Copy any wording you want to keep before switching. An empty whole-content replacement leaves the original content in place; use Visibility to hide an element.

When the text starts with a styled part, such as a colored number in bold, Replace all content shows that part above the field with Keeps its color and weight. Change the words below. Enter only the words that follow it; the styled part stays as it is.

Headline content for an audience, with the original text and Ask Righty for optionsOriginal
Headline content for an audience, with the original text and Ask Righty for options

The element editor keeps content, style, and page settings together for one audience.

Find and replace accepts plain text or a regular expression such as /team/gi. Plain-text matching is case-sensitive. The Preview below the pairs highlights replacements and shows their count. Invalid regular expressions show an error and aren't saved. Matches stay within each piece of text, so a search can't span words separated by nested page markup.

Images

For an image, Content shows Replace image instead of the text fields. Open it to upload an image or choose one from your library. You can also drop an image into the image area, or paste an Image URL under or paste an image URL and choose Use.

Uploads accept PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, or SVG, up to 2 MB. Image URLs must start with https:// or http://. Show original lets you compare the images. Set Alt text in Style.

Upload an image, choose from your library, or paste its URL.

When you select a link, including one styled as a button, Content shows Link URL and Link target:

If you'd like to…Use in Content
Change a link destinationLink URL. Use original restores the original destination.
Choose where a link opensLink target: Same as original, Same window, New window (_blank), Parent frame (_parent), or Top frame (_top).

When the text or image you selected sits inside a link, Content says This sits inside a link. Choose Edit where it links to select that link.

Style, visibility, and classes

If you'd like to…Use in Style
Keep, show, or hide the elementVisibility: No change, Show, or Hide. Show also reveals an element your site's stylesheet hides.
Describe an imageAlt text, shown for images. Use original removes your override.
Choose a style overrideAdd style, then enter its value.
Add a property not in the listEnter its name in CSS property, then choose Add.
Add or remove existing CSS classesAdd classes or Remove classes. Type a class name and press Enter to add it to the list. Pasting a b, a, b, or .a .b adds two classes. The classes must already have styles defined on your website.

The Add style choices are:

  • Text Size, Text Color, Text Weight, Line Height, and Text Align.
  • Background Color.
  • Padding, Padding left, Padding right, Padding top, Padding bottom, and Margin.
  • Border Width, Border Color, and Border Radius.
  • Opacity.

Use CSS values such as 24px, #333333, or 1rem 2rem. Opacity runs from 0 to 1. A new style's field shows the element's current value, or an example when it has none. Remove a style override to stop that change from setting the property.

Pages and element targeting

The label beside an element tells you how RightMessage finds it:

  • Smart Match uses the element's text and place on the page. The displayed selector is a backup.
  • CSS selector uses the selector directly.

In Pages, Target mode switches between those methods. Smart Match is available only when RightMessage has captured the element's identifying details. Its Text matching choices are Exact match, Contains, and Starts with. CSS selector lets you edit the selector.

Each page entry has Domain, Match, and Page path. Match offers equals, does not equal, contains, does not contain, starts with, ends with, and glob. Add page creates another entry. Remove page removes an entry when more than one remains.

Matrix, Preview, and overlapping audiences

Matrix compares copy across audiences. Filter audiences and elements, edit a cell, expand longer copy, or paste rows and columns from a spreadsheet. Empty cells show the original content. Find-and-replace cells use %s/find/replacement notation, with one instruction per line. See find and replace part of the copy.

A row's Show on page opens its element in Edit. Selecting multiple cells opens a bar with Clear and Rewrite with Righty. Clear removes the selected copy changes; the close button only clears the selection. See edit copy in the Matrix.

Preview shows your draft with the segments chosen in Preview as:. The pickers and their arrows let you compare combinations. The combination count describes the choices available, not your visitor count. Outlines identify changed elements and the audiences behind them. See preview personalization by audience.

Overlapping-audience notices appear when audiences can change the same part of an element for the same visitor. Open Overlapping audiences to choose which audience comes out on top or put several audiences in highest-first order. This changes audience priority across the campaign. See resolve audience overlaps.

Ask Righty for help

  • Ask Righty for options, at the bottom of the element editor, opens a conversation for the selected element and audience. Asking for options doesn't change the draft until you apply one.
  • Fill empty cells, in Matrix, asks Righty to fill gaps in the displayed copy.
  • Rewrite with Righty, on the multi-cell selection bar, opens a conversation about the selected cells.

Review Righty's changes in the draft. Select an audience on Righty's change card to open it and highlight its new changes; eligible change cards offer Undo. See write page copy with Righty.

When your page can't load

The editor tries to show your live page. If it can't, it can show a Copy of your page instead. The notice explains why the copy may look or work differently. It offers How to fix it, or an installation or website-settings link when that is the next step, and Try the live page again.

If the page can't load at all, use Retry, Reload page, or Open another page followed by Open page. Preview on your site lets you check your draft on the actual website. See help the editor load your site.

Remove, save, and publish changes

In the element editor, Remove this change opens a confirmation. Choose Remove change to remove this audience's personalization, not the element from your website.

Edits save automatically to your project draft. The unpublished-change count includes changes elsewhere in your project, not just this campaign. Publish opens a review of those changes, grouped by what you've edited, with before-and-after details. Review the whole list before confirming publication.

Use Preview on your site to check the draft on your real website before publishing. Your installed RightMessage snippet applies published changes; you don't need to copy the edited content into your website builder. See publish your changes.
