Plan your questions and branches
You'll start with the pages you want visitors to find, then work backward to questions that send each person to the right one.
Help visitors find the page that fits them without asking questions you don't need. Start with the pages you'd like them to reach, then work backward to a short conversation that sends each person to the right one.
Pick the pages you want people to find
Go through your website and list the pages you want to recommend. Beside each one, write who it's for. Use your real products, services, or resources.
Our example business, WorkForge (opens in a new tab), might recommend these pages:
| If the visitor is… | Send them to |
|---|---|
| An agency team handling client projects | Agencies (opens in a new tab) |
| A solo consultant handling client projects | Consultants (opens in a new tab) |
| A team building software | Software teams (opens in a new tab) |
Ask only what changes the recommendation
Choose the question that separates your pages into the biggest groups first. Add a follow-up only when one answer still leaves more than one page.
WorkForge could ask "What kind of work are you managing?" Someone who answers "Building software" can go straight to the software teams page. Someone who answers "Client projects" gets one follow-up, "Who's doing the client work?"
- "An agency team" leads to the agencies page.
- "Just me" leads to the consultants page.
Most visitors answer one question. Only the people who need a follow-up see it. Write the answers in your visitors' words, not your internal audience labels.
Put the questions in your flow
Create a flow and attach it to a widget if you haven't already. You'll need edit access to the project.
- Open Build in the flow.
- Drag Question to the point where you'd like to ask your first question.
- Create a single-answer, segment-backed question, such as a multiple-choice question with Allow multiple answers off.
- Choose Add to flow. If you chose an existing question instead, choose Use in this flow.
- Add a follow-up only under an answer that still needs one.
If an existing question doesn't have answer branches, open its node menu and choose Route off this question. Multiple-answer questions don't support a separate path for each selected answer.
Questions are shared library content. Reusing one doesn't create a separate copy of its settings.
Give every path somewhere to go
Add the matching Offer or Form to each answer's path. For a page recommendation, use an offer that links to the real page you chose earlier. Shared steps can go below the point where branches rejoin.
If Default is visible, give visitors without a matching answer a useful next step too. The canvas reference explains when that branch is hidden, how shared steps work, and what to keep before removing branches.
An empty branch doesn't stop the flow. It can continue to shared steps below it. Use Exit Flow if that path should end without showing anything else.
Forms and offers end their ordinary path. A form inside a branch won't continue to another form below the join. Put anything that needs to happen after submission in the form's post-submit path.
Use what you already know
You don't always need another question. If a rule should decide what happens next, add Condition before the affected steps. Write a Note that explains the decision, then put the matching steps under Yes and the other steps under No.
A Router lets you use a stored answer without asking again. A Random Split makes equal random groups, so use it for random assignment rather than audience matching.
Try each path on your site
Trace one visitor at a time. For WorkForge, try an agency visitor, a solo consultant, and a software team. Check the question each person sees and the page each reaches. Also try a visitor without a known answer when your flow has a missing-answer path.
Choose Preview on your site to load your draft on your real website. The debugger shows which answers and conditions RightMessage is using. Let the widget appear normally so you can check its page targeting and trigger as well as its branches. Check remembered answers and dismissal too. The widget display reference covers those settings.
Once every path leads where you intended, review the pending changes and publish. Visit normally to check the live flow.
It's working when each visitor gets only the questions they need and reaches the right page or signup. Next, see how it's doing.
