Question and Router node reference
Choose whether to ask visitors a question or route them using what you already know. See how answers, fallback paths, and shared questions work.
A Question node asks visitors for information. A Router uses information you already know to choose their next step, without displaying a question. Both can use questions from your shared library.
When to use it
Use a Question when you need to ask something before deciding what to show. Use a Router when an existing answer or segment can make that decision instead.
Single-answer choice questions can give each answer its own branch. Input questions, such as a number or email address, don't create a branch for every possible value. Use a Condition node to compare those answers.
Settings
Choose a question
A new Question node opens Choose what to ask, or reuse one of your questions. You can choose a question type, search existing questions, or choose Browse all.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add to flow | Creates the new question draft in your library and assigns it to this node. |
| Use in this flow | Assigns the existing question you've selected. |
| Done | Finishes editing the assigned question. |
| Back | Returns to selection. It discards a new local draft, but doesn't undo edits already saved to an existing question. |
| Open full settings ↗ | Opens the question's Setup page in your library. |
The shared question editor has wording, description, answers, behavior, mapping, an internal name, and a preview. Question settings explains those fields. When you edit a question from a flow, you can also set answer scores.
Choose what a Router uses
The Router's Segment group or question to split by field has a Select a segment group or question selector. Choose the existing answer or segment group you want to use. The Router won't ask for a new response.
Input questions also appear in this selector, but choosing one doesn't create numeric or text-value branches. For example, a budget answer won't create a path for each amount. Use a Condition to compare that answer.
Shared questions and copies
Editing a shared question changes it everywhere after publication. Use a copy in this flow instead creates a question with independent IDs and no responses, then assigns it to the selected node.
Other nodes keep the original question, even in the same flow. Previous responses stay with the original too. Rules that refer to the original don't automatically switch to the copy. See shared questions and copies.
Questions with an A/B test
If the question has an A/B test, the drawer lets you choose Control or a variant. Active tests show Results and Edit, with Results selected initially and tested edits locked. The wording variants share their answer structure and behavior settings.
How visitors move through it
Asking or skipping a question
A Question needs a flow and widget that can display questions. System flows can't display them. The widget's Question handling setting controls whether visitors are asked questions they've already answered.
For a single-answer choice question, selecting an answer applies its segment and sends the visitor down the matching branch. If RightMessage skips asking because the answer is already known, that existing segment can still choose the branch.
Input questions, including Number, Email, Rating, and NPS, continue without a branch for each value. Required inputs can't be skipped with the normal Skip control. Optional inputs can.
An identifying Email question can continue to another question. A form has its own completion behavior. See email questions and consent.
Choosing a Router branch
For a single-winning segment group or choice question, the Router takes the first matching configured segment branch. Default is the fallback when none matches. If there's no matching branch or fallback, no child branch runs and the flow continues outside the Router.
Multiple-answer questions
Turning on Allow multiple answers removes per-answer branching. RightMessage doesn't run every selected answer's branch. It continues without that split. Use explicit conditions after the question if you need to act on several segment memberships.
After an answer or routed branch finishes, the flow continues through its remaining steps. A Question or Router doesn't provide an offer by itself. Add the recommendation and any fallback path to the flow.
Things to know
Changing the referenced question can replace its branch structure. Check any nested steps before switching questions.
Deleting a flow node and deleting a question from the shared library are separate actions. Deleting the library question can affect other flows and linked forms.
If creating or assigning a question fails, the drawer shows an error. If the referenced question is missing, the node can't display a working input. Check the question in your library and its Uses. An empty branch alone doesn't tell you whether someone answered.
For setup steps, see route by existing answers. Use testing guidance to check both the preview and your real widget.
