Build a resource recommendation in the app
In this guide, you'll ask visitors one question, save their answer to your CRM, and send each of them to the resource that fits.
This guide is going to help you get a bit of data from the people on your website, sync it into your CRM, and then use what they share to give them the perfect resource.
You'll be introduced to the core building blocks of RightMessage along the way, and this is really the first piece of your segmentation and personalization playbook.
1. Decide what to ask
Pick one question you'd love to know the answer to, and decide where each answer should send people. Our example business, WorkForge (opens in a new tab), asks "What would you like help with first?":
| If they answer… | Recommend | Link to |
|---|---|---|
| Plan my work | A weekly planning guide | https://example.com/guides/planning |
| Coordinate my team | A team-work guide | https://example.com/guides/team-work |
| I'm exploring | The resource index | https://example.com/guides |
Swap in your own pages before you go live. Your question will appear on every page of your site, so pick one that makes sense wherever someone lands.
You'll need RightMessage installed on your website first. If onboarding is still open, choose Build from scratch to get to the dashboard.
2. Create a flow
A flow decides what visitors see next. A widget decides how and where that flow appears on your site. Creating a flow gives you both. Flows, widgets, and campaigns explains how they fit together.
- Open Flows, choose New flow, then Blank flow.
- If Where should this flow show? appears, select A new widget.
- Under What kind of widget?, keep Toaster. It slides into the bottom right corner of your pages, so you don't need to change your website at all.
- Enter
WorkForge starting guidein Flow name. - Choose Create flow.
Nothing you build goes live until you publish, so take your time.
3. Ask your question
- On the flow canvas, choose Add the first step, then Question.
- Under Segment visitors, choose Multiple choice.
- Enter
What would you like help with first?as the question. - Replace the sample answers with
Plan my work,Coordinate my team, andI'm exploring. - Leave Allow multiple answers off, so each answer gets its own path.
- Choose Add to flow.
Each answer now gets its own path on the canvas. RightMessage also saves the question to your library and creates a segment for each answer, so later you can show different things to people based on what they chose.
4. Send each answer to the right resource
- Drag Offer into the
Plan my workpath. - Choose Create a new offer / promo and give it a name you'll recognize, such as
Planning guide. - In Content, set Headline to
Make a plan for the week, add a short Description, and set Button text toOpen the planning guide. - Set Link URL to your planning guide.
- Close the drawer. Your changes save to the draft automatically.
- Do the same for
Coordinate my teamandI'm exploring, with their own headlines and links.
Keep each offer inside its own answer's path, so every answer gets the right recommendation.
5. Save answers to your CRM
If you've connected your email platform or CRM, you can save each person's answer to their contact record.
- Select the question on the canvas and choose Open full settings ↗.
- Open the tab named for your platform, such as Sync with Kit, and choose where the answers should go, such as a custom field or a tag.
Answers reach your CRM for visitors RightMessage can identify, such as subscribers who arrive from a link in one of your emails. Syncing contact data covers the details for each platform.
6. Preview it on your site
Before anything goes live, use the built-in preview to load your draft on your real website.
- Choose Preview on your site in the bar at the bottom of the dashboard. Use Choose preview URL if you'd like to start on a different page.
- Your site opens with your unpublished changes, and the toaster appears in the bottom right corner.
- Answer the question and check that you get the right recommendation.
You'll also see our debugger docked at the bottom of the page. It shows what RightMessage knows about you and why it's showing what it shows, so it's easy to see what's happening. Testing your changes covers how to try each answer as a fresh visitor.
7. Publish
Once you're happy with it, choose Publish and review your changes. Then visit your site like any other visitor to see it live.
When a real visitor can answer your question and land on the right resource, it's working. Next, see how it's doing. Add another question only when its answer would change what you recommend.
