Operating system and browser conditions
Show visitors content that fits their browser or operating system. You'll find every supported value and how the rules handle an unknown browser or device.
You can show different content based on the visitor's browser or operating system, such as installation guidance for iOS or Android.
What it checks
Device conditions compare the browser and operating system detected for the current visitor. They check software categories, not screen size.
When to use it
Use these conditions when your message depends on which browser or operating system someone uses.
They don't offer browser versions, device models, viewport widths, or a general mobile-versus-desktop switch. Widget device-display settings are separate. For your website's own JavaScript values, cookies, or localStorage, use Browser data conditions.
Options
Supported values
| To check… | Choose | Available values |
|---|---|---|
| The operating system | Operating System | iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, Linux |
| The browser | Browser | Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera |
Both start with include any of and an empty selection. You can select more than one value.
How to compare them
| Choose | When it matches | Selection needed |
|---|---|---|
| include any of | The detected value is one of your selections. | Yes |
| don't include any of | The detected value isn't selected, or detection is unknown. | Yes |
| matches any | RightMessage detected a supported value. | No |
| doesn't match any | RightMessage couldn't detect a supported value. | No |
matches any and doesn't match any hide the selection control. They check detection itself, not whether the visitor matches a previously chosen list.
An empty include any of selection doesn't match. An empty don't include any of selection excludes no detected values and also includes unknown detection.
Examples
This rule matches either Chrome or Firefox. It doesn't require both browsers.
WorkForge (opens in a new tab) could combine Operating System → include any of → iOS, Android with a page condition to show mobile installation guidance. That rule checks software, not whether the visitor is a known subscriber.
The condition builder reference explains how to combine device rules with other sources.
Things to know
Detection limits
RightMessage reads the browser's user-agent and platform information when it initializes device detection. It treats iPads reporting a Mac platform with multiple touch points as iOS. Browser detection recognizes Chrome and Firefox identifiers on iOS, along with Edge and Opera variants.
Samsung Internet counts as an unknown browser, not Chrome. Other unrecognized user agents also remain unknown. Browser privacy changes or modified user agents can affect detection.
A rule that excludes Chrome can include unknown browsers. It isn't the same as a rule that includes Safari.
How long the data lasts
The detected values describe the current browser. They aren't a saved purchase, preference, or answer. A full page load detects the environment again. Another browser or device can give different values for the same person.
