Connecting MailerLite lets you save website answers to subscriber records and use what you already know to choose their next question or offer. You can also add new signups to a MailerLite group.

Connect MailerLite

You'll need permission to manage your RightMessage project's integration and get a MailerLite API key. This connection uses the current API at connect.mailerlite.com/api, not credentials intended only for MailerLite Classic.

Each RightMessage project connects to one email platform or CRM. Check what uses an existing connection before replacing it.

  1. In MailerLite's API administration, get an API key for the account you want to connect.
  2. In your RightMessage project settings, select Integration.
  3. Under Email platforms & CRMs, choose Mailerlite. That's how it's capitalized in the connection screen.
  4. Paste the key into API Key and click Connect.
  5. Check the connection status in Overview. If the key is rejected, replace it and click Save Changes.

Keep the API key private. The health check reads MailerLite groups. You'll check subscriber updates and group additions below. Connecting doesn't map your questions automatically.

Choose what to sync

Save choice answers to subscriber fields. Groups have a separate job here. You can read group membership and add subscribers through a signup action, but you can't map each choice answer to a group. This connection doesn't manage dynamic MailerLite segments or offer tags.

  1. Open Questions and choose a multiple-choice question.
  2. Open Sync with Mailerlite.
  3. Under Destination, select the custom field in Save answers to Mailerlite.
  4. Under Answer → value, enter the value for each answer. For an interest question, you might save workshops or templates to a text field.
  5. Review the changes and click Publish before testing the live question.

Choose a defined field that fits the answer, rather than entering a new property name. MailerLite custom fields support text, number, and date values. Multiple-selection questions save comma-separated values, so use a compatible text field.

Typed answers can also use Native Fields. The available fields are First name, Last name, Company, City, State, Country, Phone, and ZIP code. Map the fields you want to save. Name and Address questions can use One field per part to save each part separately.

To create a text field from the picker, choose New Mailerlite custom field, enter Field Name using letters, numbers, and underscores, then click Create. Review any values suggested by Auto-generate mappings before publishing. Create number and date fields in MailerLite first.

After identification, RightMessage can read subscriber fields and supported native fields. Matching mapped values can also place someone in the corresponding RightMessage segment without asking again. See Map answers to contact fields and tags for other question types and mapping settings.

Choose whether signups join a group

In an Email question's Setup, keep Identify the visitor enabled and choose its Contact action:

  • Create/Update contact creates or updates the subscriber without a group destination.
  • Add to group adds them to the Groups destination you select.

Review consent, then publish. An anonymous quiz answer doesn't create a MailerLite subscriber. The identifying submission and its configured action do that.

RightMessage doesn't reactivate an unsubscribed, bounced, or junk subscriber through this API. A field update doesn't mean the subscriber can receive marketing email.

Choose a test subscriber you control and install the RightMessage snippet on the page you'll test. Add rm_ml with MailerLite's email merge tag to links to your own pages.

Here's an example for WorkForge (opens in a new tab):

Text
https://workforge.rightmessage.com/pricing.html?rm_ml={$email}

MailerLite replaces {$email} with the subscriber's email. RightMessage reads rm_ml and looks up the matching subscriber. If the URL already has a query string, use &rm_ml={$email} instead.

Use the parameter and merge tag exactly as shown, not ml_id or {{$email}}. Installing MailerLite's website code doesn't identify every visitor automatically.

Check the connection

  1. Send a MailerLite email to your test subscriber with the identifying link.
  2. Check that the delivered link contains their email, not an unfilled merge tag from a template preview.
  3. Open it in a fresh browser session on a page with RightMessage installed. Follow Verify an integration change to check that RightMessage recognizes the intended subscriber.
  4. Revisit without the parameter to check that the browser remembers them.
  5. Answer your mapped question, then open the subscriber in MailerLite and check the field value.
  6. If you've configured a group signup, submit it with a fresh email address you control. Check both the subscriber record and membership in the exact group you selected.

RightMessage removes rm_ml from the displayed URL after reading it. The original link still contains an email address, so keep it private. Another browser or device needs a new identifying link click or form submission.

A subscriber can be created even if the group addition fails. RightMessage records the group error and continues, so check membership in MailerLite itself rather than relying only on History or whether the subscriber exists.

If identification fails, check the delivered rm_ml value and that redirects keep it until the RightMessage snippet loads. If a new field or group is missing, click Clear Cache in Overview and reopen the picker. This refreshes the available destinations, but doesn't resend historical answers.

When the intended subscriber has the answer you submitted and any group you selected, the setup is working. Next, use those fields or groups in your MailerLite follow-up.
