Why visitors show as anonymous

When you open your People feed and see mostly "Anonymous Visitor" entries, it means RightMessage hasn't captured an email address for those visitors yet. This is completely normal for first-time visitors or anyone who hasn't interacted with your forms.

RightMessage can only identify a visitor once we know their email address. Until then, we track their activity but display them as anonymous.

How RightMessage identifies visitors

There are three main ways we identify visitors and connect them to your email platform:

1. RightMessage forms

When someone submits a form with an email field (like a quiz, survey, or opt-in), we immediately identify them. This is the most reliable method because the visitor actively provides their email.

Test your form in an incognito window, submit it with a test email, then refresh your People feed to confirm the visitor appears as identified.

2. Email platform click tracking

When your email platform is properly integrated, clicks on links in your emails can automatically identify visitors when they land on your site.

This works because the email platform appends contact information to the URL when someone clicks through. RightMessage reads this and matches the anonymous visitor to their contact record.

Make sure you review the integration guide for your particular email platform / CRM.

3. Email Watcher

Email Watcher automatically monitors any email input field on your website and identifies visitors when they type an email address, even if they don't submit the form.

This feature works across your entire site, not just RightMessage forms. When enabled, it watches for email-like inputs and silently identifies the visitor.

Enable Email Watcher in Settings > Visitor Identification. For full details on how it works and important limitations, see Identifying visitors automatically.

Email Watcher assumes any email entered belongs to the current visitor, which can cause misidentification if someone enters another person's email (like for gifts or referrals).

Why data might not sync to your email platform

Data only syncs for identified visitors. To confirm that the browser you're testing in is "identified", run our debugger.

Troubleshooting checklist

If you're still seeing too many anonymous visitors or sync issues, work through this checklist:

  1. Verify the RightMessage snippet is installed on all pages of your site (check your page source for rightmessage.com)

  2. Test a form submission in incognito mode and verify on the next page load in our debugger that we've identified the visitor

  3. Alternatively, simulate the visit of an existing contact by loading your website with ?email=<EMAILADDRESS> in the URL
