The People feature gives you a live, real-time view of who's visiting your website and how they're engaging with your content. You'll see recent and active visitors, track their journey through your site, and understand exactly what RightMessage offers, forms, and questions they interact with.
Accessing the People dashboard
Find the People feature in your sidebar navigation, located between Templates and Enrich. Click it to open the dashboard showing your most recent 100 visitors, sorted by activity.
The dashboard automatically refreshes every 30 seconds to show you live data. You'll see visitor cards displaying avatars, last activity time, event counts, device and browser information, location, and matched segments.
Visitors who've been active in the last 5 minutes show a green dot indicator, so you can see who's browsing your site right now.
Understanding visitor cards
Each visitor card on the dashboard shows key information at a glance:
Avatar - Shows a Gravatar if the visitor is identified by email
Last activity - Timestamp of their most recent interaction
Device and browser badges - What they're using to browse your site
Location - Geographic information based on their IP address
Click any visitor card to open their detailed profile and see their complete activity timeline.
Filtering and searching visitors
Use the date range filter to view visitors from the last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or set a custom range up to 90 days. By default, you'll see the last 7 days of activity.
Search for specific visitors by email address or URL using the search box. The autocomplete feature helps you find visitors quickly, and searching by email will reconcile anonymous sessions with identified visitor profiles.
You can also filter by visitor type to focus on identified visitors (those with email addresses) or anonymous browsers.
Viewing detailed visitor profiles
When you click a visitor card, you'll see their detailed profile with five tabs of information:
Activity tab
The Activity tab shows a chronological timeline of everything the visitor has done on your site, grouped into sessions based on 30-minute inactivity gaps. You'll see:
Pageviews with URL, page title, and time spent on each page
Flow interactions and questions they answered, with full context
Form submissions (e.g., "Submitted form: Contact Us")
Offer conversions (e.g., "Converted on offer: 20% Off")
Device, browser, and location data for each session
Segmentation tab
See all segments this visitor currently matches.
Responses tab
View all survey and quiz responses the visitor has provided. You'll see their open-ended answers along with the context of when and where they responded.
Integration Data tab
For identified visitors, see synced data from your connected email service provider, including custom fields and tags. This tab only appears when the visitor has been synced with your ESP.
The Integration Data tab helps you verify that visitor information is flowing correctly between RightMessage and your email platform.
How visitor identification works
RightMessage tracks both anonymous and identified visitors. Anonymous visitors appear without email addresses until they submit a form, answer a survey question that captures their email, or are identified through your ESP integration.
Once a visitor is identified by email, RightMessage automatically reconciles their previous anonymous sessions into a unified profile. This means you'll see their complete journey from first visit to conversion.
Cross-domain tracking prevents duplicate visitor profiles when someone browses across multiple domains in your site network.
If you see fragmented profiles for the same person, use the email search to reconcile their sessions. This typically happens when anonymous activity hasn't been merged with their identified profile yet.
Prerequisites for using People
To see visitor data in the People dashboard, you need:
The RightMessage tracking snippet installed on your website
Optional: An email service provider integration for full identified visitor profiles
The People feature is available on all RightMessage plans.
If your dashboard is empty, check that your tracking snippet is properly installed. The empty state will prompt you to complete the installation.
What data is tracked
The People feature automatically tracks and displays:
Pageviews - URL, page title, time on page, device, browser, and location
Flow interactions - Questions answered with full context and responses
Form activity - Views and submissions with form names
Offer engagement - Views and conversions with offer details
Survey responses - Open-ended answers to quiz and survey questions
Segment matching - Which segments apply to each visitor
Lead captures - When and how contact information was collected
ESP synchronization - Email addresses, custom fields, and tags from your email platform
All activity is grouped into sessions based on 30-minute inactivity gaps, making it easy to understand distinct browsing sessions over time.
