Setting up RightAsk for your website

You can set up the RightAsk feature for each individual website within your account, from your RightMessage admin area.

Follow the steps below to set up RightAsk within RightMessage.

  3. Create a new RightAsk question
  4. Configure the question and answers
  5. Define the style of the RightAsk box
  6. Configure how RightAsk will display on your website
  7. Publish RightAsk to your website
  8. Testing RightAsk on your website

Navigate to 'RightAsk' in your RightMessage admin area

Log into your RightMessage account.

In the RightMessage admin bar, click 'RightAsk'.



Step one: Installing the RightMessage tracking script

To connect RightAsk with your website, you will need to install the RightMessage tracking snippet into the header area of your website.

All you need to do is copy and paste the tracking snippet into your website’s template page so it appears before the closing </head> tag on every page of your website.

Below are step-by-step instructions to install the RightMessage tracking script on different types of websites.

Step two: Integrate RightAsk with an email marketing service (ESP)

In order to sync the RightAsk answers with your email marketing provider (ESP/CRM), you must integrate your account with one of the available services.

Navigate to the 'Integrations' area in your RightMessage Admin

To integrate RightMessage with an email marketing services, click on the ‘gear’ icon in the top right of the screen and select ‘Integrations’.


From the Integrations page, select the account that you’d like to connect.

Step three: Add your first question

To create your RightAsk question(s), click the yellow ‘Add your first question’ button.


For your new question, you can either select from one of your existing segments or create a new segment.

Step four: Configure the question and answers

Once a segment group has been chosen for the question, you will be directed to the ‘Questions’ tab.

The RightAsk question editing tab will show the question box(es) on the left and a preview of the RightAsk widget on the right.

Each question box pulls in the segments of the segment group chosen for the question.


Changing the question text

To add the question that you wish to ask your visitors, click on the white bar at the top of the question box.


Type in the question you wish to ask and click the yellow ‘Save’ button once done.

Adjust the segment labels into user-facing answers for the question

To edit the segment label, hover over the current label and click the ‘Click to change wording’ button.


Edit the text to add the answer the segment represents and click the yellow ‘Save’ button once done.


Once you edit the segment label, the original segment label will show in grey on the right of the segment.


If you want the answers to appear randomly, click on the toggle button beside ‘randomize answer order’.

Adding multiple questions

To add more questions, click on the ‘+’ icon above or below the question box.


When you select your next Segment Group, the segment group already in use will be greyed out in the Segment Group selection popup.

Sorting the order of the RightAsk question flow

To arrange the order of the questions displayed to the visitor, use the drag and drop icon on the left of each question box to move the question up or down in the order.



Step five: Define the style of the RightAsk box

The next step of the RightAsk setup, options are provided to adjust the style of the RightAsk and when RightAsk will display to the visitor.


Adjust the RightAsk colors

Use the color pickers to change the background color of the RightAsk button and text.

Click on each of the color codes to display a color picker box.


  1. Click in the color pick area to select a variation of the current color.

  2. Use the color bar to select a color, or add a color code value to the fields available - add either a Hex or RGB value.

  3. Select a predefined color.

  4. Click the droplet icon to select a color from the website in the preview pane.

  5. Click outside of the color picker area to close it.

Adjust the RightAsk position

Use the drop down provided to select where the RightAsk question box will display on your website.


Adjust when the RightAsk question displays on the website

Use the drop down provided to select at what stage RightAsk appears on the website.

You will have options to show RightAsk as soon as the website finishes loading, when the visitor has scrolled to a certain point, or after a set time.



Step six: Configure how RightAsk will display on your website

The final step in the RightAsk setup before publishing, options are provided to adjust the how often RightAsk will display to the visitor.


Adjust which device will display the RightAsk questions

Use the toggle buttons to show or hide RightAsk on different devices.

Tip: toggle all devices to ‘off’ if you do not wish to show RightAsk if you need to complete the set up in a future session, but do not want to lose the work completed so far.


Adjust the frequency of how often RightAsk questions display

Use the drop down to select if RightAsk will show on each page when the visitor is navigating your website, or if RightAsk will show once in the visitors browser session.


Adjust how many RightAsk questions are asked

Use the drop down to select if subsequent RightAsk questions are asked, or just one question is asked in the session.


Customize the ‘thank you’ message shown when answering is complete.

By default, when the visitor has finished answering one or more RightAsk questions, a thank you box will display.


This message can be adjusted to add a custom message that is relevant to your visitors.

Use the text box provided to add your custom message.


Customize the ‘why are we asking this’ message.

Under the RightAsk question, a link is shown to visitors with an explanation why they are being shown the RightAsk widget.


Use the text box provided to adjust the message to be more relevant to your visitors.


Add or remove the RightAsk branding (Business Plans only)

By default branding will be added to RightAsk. You will need to be on the ‘Business’ plan in order to turn off the branding.

Alternatively, you can adjust the link to add your RightMessage affiliate ID so that any referrals, where a visitor purchases a RightMessage plan, trigger a 20% commission for the lifetime of the account.

To remove the branding, click the toggle beside 'Hide Branding'.


Select where RightAsk will display on your website

By default RightAsk will display on all pages of your website.

Visibility options are available to allow you to either show RightAsk on specific pages, or hide RightAsk on pages.

Step seven: Publish RightAsk to your website

To finish the RightAsk set up and publish it to your website, click the 'Publish' button.


And you are done!


Step eight: Testing RightAsk on your website

To test your RightAsk question flow, open a private/incognito window.

To prevent RightMessage from tracking your clicks whilst testing, log into your RightMessage account in the private/incognito window.

Open a second tab in the private/incognito window and load your website.
