How To test and view personalizations as a subscriber

Although you have the ability within RightMessage to preview exactly how your web page will render, provided all of the conditions have been met, you can also preview the personalizations outside of RightMessage for an actual subscriber that meets the criteria.

The different scenarios for testing as a subscriber are:

  • Subscriber regardless of tags or custom fields associated with their profile

  • Subscriber with a custom tag

  • Subscriber with a custom field

Locate the subscriber ID in your email marketing provider account

Within your Email Marketing account, locate a subscriber record for which you know meets the criteria you have set up in RightMessage. You will need to copy their subscriber ID.

Use the links below for how to access the subscriber ID for your ESP

View your website using a subscriber ID

Drip subscriber ID

To locate the subscriber ID in Drip, log into your Drip account, and from the main dashboard, click on the ‘Subscribers’ link at the top of the screen.

Click on the subscriber that you want to view the personalizations as.

In the subscribers profile area, note the value containing letters and numbers at the end of the URL:

Append the value to the end of the website URL you are personalizing in a private/incognito window:

yourdomainname.com/?__s=tqiaf6farsospzvrogvb

Note: there are two underscores added after the question mark

ConvertKit subscriber ID

To locate the subscriber ID in ConvertKit, log into your ConvertKit account, and from the main dashboard, click on the ‘Subscribers’ link at the top of the screen.

Click on the subscriber that you want to view the personalizations as.

In the subscribers profile area, note the number value at the end of the URL:

Append the value to the end of the website URL you are personalizing in a private/incognito window:

yourdomainname.com/?ck_subscriber_id=184758502

Active Campaign subscriber ID

To locate the subscriber ID in Active Campaign, log into your Active Campaign account, and from the main dashboard, click on the ‘Contacts’ link on the left side of the screen.

Click on the subscriber that you want to view the personalizations as.

In the subscribers profile area, note the number value at the end of the URL:

Append the value to the end of the website URL you are personalizing in a private/incognito window:

yourdomainname.com/?rm_ac=1

Note about Active Campaign tags: if you rename a tag in your Active Campaign account, be sure to update the tags in your RightMessage segments to match

Infusionsoft subscriber ID

To locate the subscriber ID in Infusionsoft, log into your Infusionsoft account, and from the main dashboard, click on Contacts.

Note the subscriber id you want to view the personalizations as.

Append the value to the end of the website URL you are personalizing in a private/incognito window:

yourdomainname.com/?rm_isoft=4

Open a private/incognito window to view your site as the subscriber

To view the personalizations for a specific subscriber, in a private/incognito window (so you don’t cookie your own machine as that subscriber), use the following URL examples for the email marketing service you are testing.

  • Drip: yourdomainname.com/?__s=tqiaf6farsospzvrogvb

  • ConvertKit: yourdomainname.com/?ck_subscriber_id=123

  • Active Campaign: yourdomainname.com/?rm_ac=123

  • Infusionsoft: yourdomainname.com/?rm_isoft=123

Make sure to swap the value at the end of the URL with the one for the subscriber you are testing with.

The reason we are adding the subscriber ID after the URL, is it allows RightMessage to identify a specific subscriber and evaluate their tags and fields.

How you see page is exactly how that subscriber will see the page.

Example

In the below example we are going to test a personalization for a subscriber that has a specific tag.

In the segment, set the condition to check the tags of the Email Marketing service you are using, and assign the tag value you want to return true.

For the Campaign we have created, the call to action button on the home page of the website has been personalized to direct any subscribers with the tag of beginner, to continue watching their beginner courses.

Once the personalization has been published, we will clear the browser caching, and open a new private/incognito window.

Type in the URL of the website, with the subscriber ID from your email marketing service appended to the end of the URL - the below screenshot is detecting a ConvertKit subscriber.

RightMessage will detect the subscriber ID and the tag associated with the profile, and load the CTA with the personalized text.

Note: Remember to close down the private/incognito window and clear your browser caching when you want to test personalizations for a different segment/subscriber.
