# Widget types and supported controls

You can compare widget placements, see which controls each type supports, and choose one that fits your page.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

Choose how your questions, forms, and offers appear on your site. An inline widget sits inside the page. A **Popup** opens in the center, a **Toaster** in a corner, a **Bar** across an edge, and a **Full-screen takeover** over the whole screen.

The new-flow form calls the inline type **Inline**. The new-widget form calls the same type **Embedded**.

## Types at a glance

| Type in the creation screen | Placement | Trigger choices | Important limits |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Embedded** | Inside existing page content | Placement spots or an embed placeholder, not a trigger | No dismissal, close button, backdrop, shadow, or **Display** device chips. |
| **Popup** | Center of the screen | Immediately, scroll, time, exit intent, form submission, or manually | No left or right placement setting. |
| **Toaster** | Bottom left or bottom right | Immediately, scroll, time, or manually | No exit-intent or form-submission trigger. Only **Plain** and **Paddington** themes. |
| **Bar** | Top or bottom | Immediately, scroll, time, manually, or pinned to the top | No exit-intent trigger. Spans the page width. No header or progress bar. |
| **Full-screen takeover** | Covers the screen | Immediately, scroll, time, exit intent, or manually | No form-submission trigger, header, or progress bar. |

New widgets use **Plain** styling. The creation screen initially selects **Embedded**. New floating widgets start with **Immediately**, all three device targets enabled, and no targeting restriction. Review those defaults before publishing.

## Inline

An inline widget stays within your page content. [WorkForge](https://workforge.rightmessage.com) could put a survey on its contact page using a shortname placeholder or a placement spot.

The **Display** tab contains **Where it appears** and **Question handling**. An embed needs a matching placeholder or complete placement rule. Its flow still decides what content the visitor sees. See [Embed a widget](https://rightmessage.com/help/embed-a-widget).

## Popup

A Popup opens over the page and stays centered. It supports a backdrop color, opacity, and blur. It can show a header and a progress bar.

Popup is the only type with **After a form is submitted**. That trigger watches form submissions on the page. It is separate from the submission action inside a RightMessage form.

## Toaster

A Toaster opens in a bottom corner. New Toasters use the right side. **Placement** changes it to **Bottom left** or **Bottom right**.

**When they click close** offers **Dismiss right away** or **Minimize first**. Toasters can show a header and progress bar. They support Plain and Paddington, not the other image themes.

## Bar

A Bar is a strip across the top or bottom. New Bars use the top position. Their typography defaults are smaller than those of a Popup.

**Pinned to the top of the page** appears immediately and pushes the website content down. It is different from the ordinary **Immediately** trigger. Bars have no width slider or Custom density spacing because their content runs across the page.

## Full-screen takeover

A Full-screen takeover covers the visitor's screen. It supports backdrop settings and exit intent, but not the Popup's form-submission trigger.

Headers and progress bars are unavailable for this type. Review the full-size preview on a phone as well as a desktop before publishing.

## Shared controls and content

All types attach to a regular flow and support **Question handling**. The flow owns questions, forms, offers, and branching. Reusing a flow does not require reusing a widget's design.

To set one up, see [Create a widget and attach a flow](https://rightmessage.com/help/creating-and-designing-widgets). For individual controls, use the [display reference](https://rightmessage.com/help/widget-display-reference) and [design reference](https://rightmessage.com/help/widget-design-reference). Saving a widget doesn't make it live. [Publish your changes](https://rightmessage.com/help/publishing-your-changes) after you've tried the flow on your website.

## Creation settings

You need project edit access to create a widget. Under **Which flow should it show?**, choose an existing regular flow or **Create a new flow**. System flows can't attach to widgets.

**Copy the design of an existing widget** reuses that widget's styling, not its page rules or trigger. **Widget name** must be unique, even when capitalization differs.

New widgets start enabled. Turn **Enabled** off while you build if you're not ready for the widget to go live in the next project-wide publish. The editor has **Overview**, **Analytics**, **Content**, **Display**, and **Design** tabs. A new flow still needs questions, a form, or an offer.

## Find a widget

Use **Grid** for visual cards or **List** for rows. Filter by **Type**, **Flow**, **Status**, or **Shows on page**. Search with **Find by name or flow**.

**Status** offers **Any status**, **On**, and **Off**. **Sort** orders by shown count, engaged count, engagement rate, name, or last modification time, in either direction. It changes the list order, not which widget appears on your website.

**Shows on page** finds page matches. A matching widget can still be hidden by its trigger or flow logic. The date selector changes the reporting period, not display rules. See [widget reporting](https://rightmessage.com/help/widget-and-offer-results) for the counts and rates.
