# Map answers to contact fields and tags

You'll save visitors' answers to your email platform or CRM, so you can use what they tell you in your follow-up.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

Save what visitors tell you to their contact records, so your follow-up can reflect their answers. You'll choose a field or tag for each question, then check that the data reaches your email platform.

You'll need a [connected email platform or CRM](https://rightmessage.com/help/topics/esps-and-crms), permission to edit the project, and a provider account that can write to your chosen fields or tags.

Answers reach your CRM only for visitors RightMessage can identify. Existing contacts can arrive through a supported email link. New contacts need a signup action, such as a configured Email question or form. Mapping an answer doesn't create a subscriber.

## Choose where choice answers go

1. Open **Questions** and select your question. From a flow, select the question and choose **Open full settings ↗**. For a segment group, open **Segments** and select the group.
2. Open the question's sync tab. Its label includes your provider, such as **Sync with Kit**.
3. If **Sync mode** appears, choose **Custom Field** or a supported tag or list option. Your platform may use a different name, such as **Merge Fields** for Mailchimp.
4. Under **Destination**, choose the field that should store the answer.
5. Under **Answer → value**, set the value to save for each answer. For example, [WorkForge](https://workforge.rightmessage.com) maps its "Remote" answer to `remote`.
6. If you're using tags or lists instead, choose a destination beside each answer.
7. If the question allows **Other**, choose a separate field under **'Other' write-ins**.

For a field with predefined choices, select one of your platform's allowed values. Otherwise, enter the value you'd like to save. **AI Generate** can suggest values for fields without predefined choices. Review those suggestions before using them.

Keep saved values stable when you rewrite visible answers. Changing "Remote" to "We work remotely" doesn't require changing `remote`. Changing that saved value can affect your email automations and which contacts match the answer's segment.

Field sync saves a value for each answer. Multiple answers use comma-separated values, so the field must accept that format. Tag or list sync gives each answer its own destination.

Single-answer questions default to field sync when your platform supports it. Multiple-answer questions prefer a supported tag or list mode. With supported tag sync, RightMessage adds the selected answers' tags and removes mapped tags for answers that no longer apply. It leaves unrelated tags alone.

For HubSpot, choose **Property**. For Customer.io, choose **Attribute**. Their visible **Lists** and **Segments** modes currently send tag operations that those providers reject. The separate **Add to list** and **Add to segment** contact actions work differently. See [Connect HubSpot](https://rightmessage.com/help/integrating-rightmessage-with-hubspot) or [Connect Customer.io](https://rightmessage.com/help/integrating-rightmessage-with-customerio).

If you switch between field and tag modes, **Clear Existing Mappings?** may appear. **Switch & Clear** removes the old mappings. **Cancel** keeps them.

The choice answer and its Other write-in need separate fields. If you see a highlighted conflict, choose another field for the write-in. The full write-in stays in **Responses**, even if your provider limits the text it accepts. The editor's 254-character message isn't a verified limit for every platform.

## Save typed answers

1. Open the input question's sync tab for your provider.
2. Under **Save answers to**, followed by your provider's name, choose a compatible field.
3. For a first-and-last Name or an Address question, choose **One field** or **One field per part**.
4. With **One field per part**, choose a destination for each part you want to save. Name has **First name** and **Last name**. Address has **Street**, **City**, **Region**, **Postcode**, and **Country**.
5. If **Clear existing mappings?** appears after changing modes, choose **Switch and clear** only if you intend to replace the old destinations. **Cancel** retains them.

You can save the whole answer or its separate parts, but not both. A Full name question uses one field. Input questions can use **Native Fields** or **Custom Fields** when your provider offers them. Choice questions use custom fields.

## Find or create a destination

If your provider supplies a field list, you can search it in the picker. Providers with unstructured attributes let you type the exact field name instead.

The clear control removes the selected field. If a choice question already has mapped values, you'll see **Remove sync destination?**. **Remove** clears both the field and its values. **Cancel** keeps them.

You can create a field when the picker offers **New**, followed by your provider and field label. Creating it changes your provider account immediately, before you publish the RightMessage mapping.

1. Select the **New** action.
2. Enter **Field Name** using letters, numbers, and underscores. Duplicate names are checked without regard to capitalization.
3. For a choice question, leave **Auto-generate mappings** enabled to request suggested values, or turn it off to **Set mappings manually**.
4. Click **Create**.
5. Review the new field and each answer value before publishing.

**Auto-generate mappings** starts enabled when available. If the field is created but the suggested values fail to load, keep the field and fill in the values yourself.

If fields won't load, **Your saved destination is unchanged** means RightMessage has kept your mapping. Choose **Manage connection** to fix the connection without clearing a valid field.

## Check that the answers reach your contacts

For a live test, you'll need the project snippet on your website and a way to [identify your test contact](https://rightmessage.com/help/how-do-we-identify-returning-subscribers-or-contacts).

1. Review and [publish your changes](https://rightmessage.com/help/publishing-your-changes).
2. Identify a test contact you control on your website.
3. Submit an answer and check its field or tag in your email platform.
4. Identify the same contact in a separate clean browser and check that the saved choice matches the expected segment.

Choice mappings work in both directions. An identified contact's existing field or tag can put them in the matching segment. The mapping creates **Auto synced** rules, which you manage through the mapping rather than editing in the rule builder. These rules don't identify an anonymous visitor.

During an active question A/B test, you can still edit input-answer mappings. The Email question's contact action is separate and stays locked during the test.

When the contact has the answer you submitted and matches the expected segment on a return visit, the mapping is working. [Verify a new connection or replacement API key](https://rightmessage.com/help/verify-an-integration-change) walks through the full check. If you have more questions to map, you can [map several at once](https://rightmessage.com/help/bulk-sync-flow-questions-to-your-esp).
