# Phone number question reference

You can collect internationally formatted phone numbers and save them to your CRM. A phone answer doesn't identify the visitor or give you permission to text them.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

A **Phone number** question checks the format of a visitor's number and saves it in international format.

## When to use it

Use this question when you need a phone number for follow-up. Collecting the number doesn't identify the visitor or give you permission to send text messages.

To identify a contact before saving their number, use an [identifying email question](https://rightmessage.com/help/email-questions-and-consent) or another supported identification method.

| Setting | Default and what it does |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Default country** | United States for a new question. The visitor's detected country takes precedence when available. If neither is available, the live control falls back to United States. |
| **Placeholder** | Empty override. Sets the hint inside the field. |
| **Mobile numbers only** | Off. When on, accepts only mobile-compatible phone types. |
| **Required** | On. Turn it off to allow skipping. |

Visitors can change the country code. The live phone control uses its phone-input library to check the number. An invalid number shows an error and prevents the question from advancing. This checks the format. It doesn't call or text the number to verify ownership.

### Check the format on your website

The dashboard preview uses a simpler phone-format check than the live control. Test on your website with the country and number format you want to collect, even if the preview accepts the number.

See [shared question settings](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-settings-reference) for wording and button labels.

## How answers are stored and synced

RightMessage saves accepted numbers in international format. **Save answers to** offers compatible native or custom fields in your connected platform. Answers can still appear in **Responses** without a mapping. Mapping a phone number doesn't identify the visitor. See [answer sync](https://rightmessage.com/help/synchronizing-contact-data-with-your-email-platform-or-crm) for destination checks.

Phone answers don't automatically create segments or answer branches. Use [input-answer conditions](https://rightmessage.com/help/conditions-answers) to compare the saved number. A [linked form field](https://rightmessage.com/help/form-fields-reference) submits with its form.

The editor preview doesn't record answers or send data to your email platform. Existing edits autosave to the draft and affect every use after publication. The [Questions library reference](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-library-reference) covers creating and reusing questions.
