# Multiple choice question reference

You can turn answer choices into segments, choose how they appear, and use each visitor's answer to decide what to show next.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

A **Multiple choice** question turns each answer into a segment you can use to personalize your website or follow-up.

## When to use it

Use multiple choice when you know the answers that would change what you recommend. [WorkForge](https://workforge.rightmessage.com) could ask which project problem matters most, then show a different resource for each answer.

You can let visitors choose one answer or several. Single-answer questions can give each answer its own path through a flow. Multiple-answer questions use a shared next step instead.

## Settings

A new question asks **What brings you here today?** and starts with **Explore my options**, **Get advice**, and **Get started**. It uses **Buttons**, accepts one answer, and has randomization and Other write-ins off.

### Write and arrange your answers

In **Answers**, you can edit rich-text labels, drag answers to reorder them, and use **Add answer**, **Edit answer conditions**, or **Delete answer**.

Flow editors also have **Edit answer scores**. Conditions control who sees an answer. Scores change named flow scores when someone selects it. Neither setting automatically assigns the answer through **Auto-Segment**.

### Choose how answers appear

| **Show answers as** | What visitors see |
| ------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Buttons** | One button per answer. A single selection advances. Multiple answers add a Next step. |
| **Radio** | Visitors choose before clicking Next. Multiple-answer mode uses checkboxes. |
| **Images** | Each answer has a media selection. **Hide answer labels** can hide the wording. |
| **Dropdown** | A compact single-answer list. Unavailable with multiple answers. |

Your widget can change the presentation. A Bar renders single-answer Buttons or Images questions as a dropdown. Radio and multiple-answer questions keep their own controls. Check the widget preview to see how your question will appear.

### Allow several answers or a write-in

**Allow multiple answers** defaults off. Turning it on removes per-answer branches and switches Dropdown to Buttons. Radio stays selected and uses checkboxes. Selecting several answers can put someone in several segments, but it doesn't run every answer branch.

**Add an "Other" write-in** defaults off. With one answer allowed, Other opens a Short text or Long text follow-up. With multiple answers allowed, the write-in appears inline.

**Randomize answer order** defaults off. It shuffles eligible ordinary answers while keeping special Other choices in place.

Choice questions don't have the input-question **Required** or Skip setting. See [shared question settings](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-settings-reference) for pinned labels, write-in controls, and how these options work together.

## How answers are stored and synced

The **Sync** tab maps answer segments to a custom-field value or supported tags or lists. Field mapping values are separate from the wording visitors see. Other write-ins have their own destination, which must not conflict with the structured-answer field.

**Auto-Segment** can apply an answer from conditions without asking. Whether the question then appears depends on the widget's **Question handling** setting.

**Results** shows answer distributions. Ordinary choice clicks aren't individual text rows in **Responses**. The editor preview records nothing and doesn't test updates to your email platform.

Shared edits apply wherever the question is used after publication. The [Questions library reference](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-library-reference) explains creation, copies, **Uses**, and deletion. See [Question and Router nodes](https://rightmessage.com/help/flow-node-question-router) to send visitors down different paths based on their answers.
