# Question design and answer sync questions

You'll get answers to common questions about what to ask, how much to ask, and how to save answers without disrupting your email follow-up.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

Choose questions that help you decide what to show or send someone next. These answers will help you keep surveys short, reuse what you already know, and save answers in the fields or tags your email follow-up expects.

## What should I ask first?

Ask the question whose answer changes the next message, resource, recommendation, or follow-up. A visitor's main problem is useful to know when each answer leads to a different resource. See [choose information you'll use](https://rightmessage.com/help/choose-useful-questions) for a worked example.

## Should I ask about the main problem before job title or industry?

Start with whichever answer changes the next step most. A main problem can be more useful than a job title, but ask about industry first if it decides eligibility or the relevant follow-up. RightMessage doesn't require a particular question order.

## How many questions should I ask?

Ask only as many as you need to give someone a useful next step. There's no universal best count. Add a follow-up only where an earlier answer makes it relevant, then review [answer rates and activity](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-results-and-activity) to see where people stop answering.

## Should I shorten my questions and answers?

Yes, when you can shorten them without losing meaning. Short, distinct choices give visitors less to read and compare. Keep one decision in each question. Put necessary context in **Description** and remove anything that doesn't change the answer. [Write and preview questions](https://rightmessage.com/help/best-practices-for-question-wording) shows the controls.

## Does every answer become a segment?

Choice answers become segments, but typed input answers don't. One choice question represents a category, such as Business Type, and its answers represent segments, such as Software and Client services. Multiple choice and Yes / No use this model. Input questions save values instead. A typed budget doesn't create a segment for every amount.

## Can I use information I already have?

Yes. Existing answers, **Auto-Segment** rules, and mapped data from your email platform can assign a choice answer without asking again. To use data from your platform, RightMessage needs to identify the contact. Set the widget to **Ask questions we don't know the answer to** to skip known questions.

Answer-visibility conditions only hide choices. They don't assign answers. See [segment visitors with survey answers](https://rightmessage.com/help/how-to-segment-visitors-with-flow-surveys).

## Should I store an answer in a custom field or as a tag?

Use a field for one current value, such as someone's primary goal. Use tags or lists when you want to track membership and your platform supports that mapping. Not every platform offers every option.

Multiple mapped choices use comma-separated values in field mode. Check that the destination accepts that representation. [Answer sync](https://rightmessage.com/help/synchronizing-contact-data-with-your-email-platform-or-crm) covers provider differences and identification.

## How do I avoid contradictory old and new answers?

Reuse one shared question for the same information, and decide whether someone can have one answer or several. Those choices mean different things for their segment membership.

For a current single answer, a dedicated field is easier to interpret than accumulated tags. Changing a RightMessage answer doesn't necessarily remove historical tags or fields used by an older automation. Review those rules in your email platform and test with a contact who already has the old value.

Passive sync doesn't blindly overwrite an existing platform field with stale browser data. An answer someone submits is an active update. [Answer sync](https://rightmessage.com/help/synchronizing-contact-data-with-your-email-platform-or-crm) explains the difference.

## Can I change answer wording without breaking my email automation?

Yes, if you keep the answer's identity and mapped value unchanged. Visible wording and **Answer → value** mappings are separate. [WorkForge](https://workforge.rightmessage.com) can change "Client updates" to "Keep clients informed" while keeping the value its automation expects.

Review the **Sync** tab after the edit. Deleting an answer and adding a replacement is different from editing its wording. A [copied question](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-library-reference#shared-questions-and-copies) has independent IDs and doesn't automatically inherit every rule that targeted the original.

## Does a saved response mean my email platform received it?

No. RightMessage can save a response without identifying the visitor or updating your email platform. Segment membership is separate too. Check the actual test contact and destination field, tag, or list with [verify an integration change](https://rightmessage.com/help/verify-an-integration-change).
