# Use personalized phrases with fallbacks

You'll tailor a few words to someone's segment, keep a useful fallback, and check how every version reads in the full sentence.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

Make a question or offer sound like it was written for the person reading it. For [WorkForge](https://workforge.rightmessage.com), "your business" could become "your agency" or "your software company".

You'll need project editing access, a segment group with segment options, and a rich-text field with a **Personalize** control. You create phrases inside supported content editors, not on a separate phrase-library page.

## Create the phrase

1. Open your question, offer, or another supported content field.
2. Select the words you'd like to replace.
3. Choose **Personalize** in the text toolbar.
4. Choose the segment group under **Depending on someone matching into the following Segment Group...**.
5. Review **Show the following if they don't match to any segments:**. Your selected words are the starting fallback.
6. Write your alternatives under **Otherwise show a segment-specific personalization:**.
7. Choose **Add Personalization**.

The group must have segment options before you can save. Empty alternatives show the fallback as their placeholder. Read the fallback in the full sentence so it still makes sense when you don't know the visitor's segment.

## Write and edit your alternatives

**AI Generate** can suggest wording using the surrounding content, your fallback, the segment names, and the linked question when there is one. Review each suggestion in the full sentence. You still choose which audiences to target.

To edit a phrase, click its token, change the wording or fallback, then choose **Save Personalization**. Every use of the same phrase shares those settings through a Liquid reference like `{{ phrases.<id> }}`.

## Check each version

If someone matches several segments, the first matching personalization in the configured segment order wins. Higher entries take priority. RightMessage doesn't join the alternatives into one phrase.

1. Open the editor's variation preview.
2. Read each wording combination and the no-match fallback as complete sentences.
3. For on-site content, return to the dashboard and choose **Preview on your site**.
4. Use the debugger docked at the bottom to check which segments match and what wording appears.

The phrase dialog also has **Debug on site** for inspecting the page. [Testing your changes](https://rightmessage.com/help/best-practices-for-testing) covers how to try different visitors.
