# Segment visitors with survey answers

You'll use survey answers to group visitors, show them relevant next steps, and avoid asking again when you already know the answer.

Available on the Grow, Scale, and Pro plans.

Every choice answer can tell you what to show someone next. You'll turn those answers into segments, then use them to change the message or recommendation each visitor gets.

You don't need an email platform to segment anonymous visitors. You'll need project editing access, a [flow](https://rightmessage.com/help/creating-flows), a widget that displays it, and the RightMessage snippet installed on your site.

## Write your question and answers

Ask about one distinction that changes what you recommend. [WorkForge](https://workforge.rightmessage.com) could ask "What best describes your work?" with Software and Client services as the answers.

1. Open **Questions** and choose **New question**.
2. Choose **Multiple choice** or **Yes / No**.
3. Write your question and replace the default answer wording.
4. Use **Add answer** if you need more choices.
5. Enter an **Internal name**, then choose **Create question**.

Each choice answer becomes a segment. A typed Number or Long text answer doesn't automatically create a segment for every value.

## Ask it in your flow

1. Open the flow and add a **Question** node.
2. Choose your saved question from the library.
3. Choose **Use in this flow**.
4. Add the follow-up or recommendation you want on each single-answer path.

If visitors need to select several answers, [turn on Allow multiple answers](https://rightmessage.com/help/how-to-use-multi-select-questions) and give them a shared next step instead. Multiple-answer questions don't keep per-answer branches.

## Use known information before asking

You can assign an answer from information you already have, so visitors don't have to tell you twice. If your rules use email-platform data, you'll need a supported connection and an identified contact.

1. Open the question's **Auto-Segment** tab.
2. Choose **Edit rules** beside the answer.
3. Add conditions that reliably tell you this answer applies.
4. Choose **Done**.
5. In the widget's **Question handling** setting, choose **Ask questions we don't know the answer to**.

That setting skips questions answered earlier or assigned automatically. It belongs to the widget, so another widget using the same flow can behave differently. See the [widget display reference](https://rightmessage.com/help/widget-display-reference#question-handling) for the other choices.

**Edit answer conditions** does a different job. It controls who sees a choice, not who gets assigned that answer. The [question library reference](https://rightmessage.com/help/question-library-reference#auto-segment-and-sync) covers automatic rules, rules supplied by sync mappings, and A/B test locks.

## Check both paths, then publish

If you want answers in your email platform, review the question's **Sync** mappings first. This lets you use those same answers in your follow-up, once RightMessage can identify the contact.

1. Choose **Preview on your site** to open your draft on your real website with the debugger.
2. Try the flow as a visitor without a known answer. Answer the question and check the next step.
3. Try each known-answer path and check that it skips the question and goes to the right place.
4. [Publish your changes](https://rightmessage.com/help/publishing-your-changes) when both paths work.
5. Check the live flow with a fresh visitor and a returning or identified test contact.

See [testing your changes](https://rightmessage.com/help/best-practices-for-testing) for help trying different visitor states.

When the answer assigns the intended segment and sends the visitor down the right path, you can use that segment elsewhere on your site. If you're syncing answers, [check the destination in your email platform too](https://rightmessage.com/help/synchronizing-contact-data-with-your-email-platform-or-crm). A saved answer and an accepted provider update are separate checks.
