# Find your project ID

You'll find the ID that connects a plugin, developer tool, or AI assistant to the right RightMessage project, without confusing it with a widget ID or API token.

Your project ID tells a plugin, developer, support team, or AI assistant which RightMessage project you're working with. You can copy it from the header in **Settings** > **General**.

## Copy your project ID

1. Open the project switcher and select your project. Check the business and website if you have more than one.
2. Open **Settings**, then **General** under **Project**.
3. Copy the value beside **Project ID** in the page header.

Each project has its own ID and snippet. The ID is public and appears in the website snippet. It isn't an API token and doesn't give anyone access to your account.

## Check that you're using the right ID

Use **Project ID** when a plugin or tool asks for the project. A widget ID identifies one widget, and an embed **Shortname** identifies a placement. Neither replaces the project ID.

If your AI assistant asks for `project_id`, give it this public ID. Have it confirm the project's name and website through an authenticated read before it makes changes. The [assistant setup guide](https://rightmessage.com/help/first-experience-with-an-ai-assistant) covers the connection.

**Want to rename the project?**

The name helps people recognize the project. Changing it doesn't change the project ID, widget IDs, or installed snippet.

1. In **Settings** > **General**, click the project name or the pencil beside it.
2. Enter a name your team will recognize.
3. Press **Enter** or click outside the name to save. Press **Escape** to cancel before saving.
4. Check for a save error before you leave the page.

RightMessage removes spaces at the start and end. A blank name leaves the existing name unchanged.

Once the ID matches the project you intended, it's ready to use. If you're installing RightMessage on your website, [copy the full snippet](https://rightmessage.com/help/getting-started-with-rightmessage#2-add-rightmessage-to-your-website) rather than building one from the ID.
