# Restore a version to your draft

You'll bring an earlier project setup back into your draft, check it on your site, and decide whether to publish it. Your live site stays unchanged until then.

You can recover an earlier project setup without changing your live website straight away. Restoring puts that version into your draft, and RightMessage makes a safety backup of the setup it replaces. You decide when to publish it.

Check that you're in the right project and coordinate with anyone editing the [shared draft](https://rightmessage.com/help/drafts-and-publishing), including through Righty or another AI assistant. A restore replaces the whole project configuration, not just one question or campaign.

## Find your backups

1. Choose **Search, create, or ask Righty…** in the top bar.
2. Enter `roll back`.
3. Select **Roll back…**, described as **Restore a previous version**.

The **Project Backups** drawer opens. You can also reach it through **Roll back…** in the unpublished changes popover. Configuration history lives here, rather than under **JavaScript Snippet** in project settings.

## Choose the version you want

Find the date you need in the timeline and read the entry's description and time. Scroll down to load older entries.

The timeline includes saved configuration snapshots and **Published** entries. **Live** marks the current publish. **Latest** marks the newest displayed snapshot.

For a snapshot, choose **Show changed items** to expand its changes by category. Snapshots are taken before changes. The list compares that snapshot with the next newer snapshot, or with the current draft for the latest entry. Restoring replaces the whole setup, not just the items in that list.

Descriptions help you find edits made by a person, the API, Righty, or an assistant connected through MCP. Check the changed items as well as the description.

If you see **No backups yet.**, this project doesn't have saved history to restore.

## Restore it to your draft

> **Your current draft will be replaced**
>
> A restore doesn't merge the older version with your current edits. Save your work first. RightMessage makes a backup before restoring, but it can't preserve unsaved text that's still on your screen.

1. Choose **Restore** beside the snapshot. On a wide screen, hover over the row or focus its controls to reveal the button.
2. In **Restore this backup?**, check the saved date and time.
3. Choose **Restore**, or **Cancel** to leave your draft unchanged.

The **Restored** notification confirms the restore. RightMessage refreshes your configuration and backup list. Your live website hasn't changed.

To restore an earlier publish instead, find its **Published** entry and choose **Restore**. Check the publication date in **Restore this published version?**, then choose **Restore** again. The current **Live** entry doesn't have a restore button. Restoring an earlier publish also creates a safety backup and leaves the live site unchanged until you publish again.

## Check the restored draft

1. Open the items affected by the restore.
2. Choose **Preview on your site** to try the draft on the relevant pages. Your real website opens with the debugger docked at the bottom.
3. Check the full unpublished changes list, including changes outside the item that caused the problem.
4. [Review and publish](https://rightmessage.com/help/publishing-your-changes) when the draft is what you'd like visitors to see.

Made a mistake restoring? Return to **Project Backups** and restore the safety backup created just before it. Review that draft before publishing.

A configuration restore doesn't undo billing actions, reconnect an integration, recreate a deleted image file, or recover deleted visitor data.

## If you can't find or restore a backup

RightMessage keeps the 50 most recent snapshots, plus one per day from the past 30 days. It removes older snapshots automatically. The timeline hides adjacent snapshots with identical configuration, so you won't see an entry for every keystroke.

If the changed-item list or restore fails, reopen the drawer and inspect the current draft. Keep the entry's date and the error message if you contact support.

Once the restored draft shows the setup you wanted, you're ready to check it with [the testing procedure](https://rightmessage.com/help/best-practices-for-testing) before it goes live.
